Country Matters ~ The Untamed Fire.
How gaily glows the gliding foam
Upon the river’s flood;
How bright is the phosphorescent shine
Amid the frothy mud
Now wandering lonely is a cloud
Of yellow toxic murk;
The Village pond’s an emerald bog
Where nameless creatures lurk.
Our nuclear waste disposal site
Lies three short furlongs hence
Its concrete coffins glow at night
By day, leak through the fence.
Old Farmer Giles, of ancient lore
Has long ago retired;
A lab technician’s bought his place
And all the fields are wired.
With vast arrays of bugs and probes,
Each one a strange device
To hold at bay Dame Nature, who
We always thought so nice.
With nitrates and insecticides
They scatter on the land
More active chemicals than Brighto
Beach has grains of sand.
So should you yearn to walk the dales
And gaze on fields or flowers,
Don’t you leave your lead-lined suit at home
Or you’ll be dead in hours!
- Christopher Mann.
