How can I break my 5 year old Border Collie of digging up my grass in my yard?

I put in an underground fence which keeps him out of the flower beds. I bought a remote shock training collar and he will not dig in the grass as long as we are in sight. But as soon as we turn our back on him and are out of line of sight he is back to digging again. We correct him with the training collar when we see him digging but the dog is smart enough to know that when we can't see him he can do what ever he wants to do even with the training collar on.





We make sure he gets lots of exercise and plenty of attention but nothing works as far as digging up the grass goes. Some folks have suggested neutering him but I don't want to neuter a Regristered male Border Collie.





About the only solution left is put in a kennel and keep him penned up or get rid of an otherwise wonderful companion.





Any ideas or references will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the club! Our border collie also dug. No mater what I did, she continued to dig. Your right, their sneaky,they wait till your gone, or out of sight, than away they go. Finally,I had to compromise with her. We had a little talk and I showed her what area she could dig in(about a 4x4 area) what do you know,we got along great after that. She stuck to her area to dig. I figured she was more important to me than a little bit of grass. And she was, she lived happy for thirteen years.
Reply:Have you considered putting toys out there with her so that she has something else to do,this breed needs some sort of a job. generally, digging is a sign of boredom in dogs. I would speak to a reputable trainer in your area to see if they would have some other suggestions for your dog. Unless you intend to breed your dog, I would recommend that you neuter him as he will have less risk of problems associated with being unneutered later on in life and he will make a much better pet. My Border Collie is neutered and registered. Good Luck to you.

Reply:Any time you catch the dog digging approach sternly say no then pick up the torn sod and put it right in front of the dog's face and repeat no, then take the dog someplace else, the garage, a dog run area, fix the sod as best you can then let the dog back in the grassy area. Repeat this every time the dog digs up the sod and it should put 2 and 2 together and stop doing it. Good luck.

Reply:Ok; There is no dog in the world that can dig through wire mesh.


Lay wire mesh flat on the grass and peg it down firmly. The grass grows up through the mesh and the dog can't dig through it. It looks fine and works very well.





AND, in addition, make your collie a sandpit where you actually encourage him to dig. Give the pit clearly defined borders so your dog has no confusion about where to dig and where not do. Bury bones in the sand to encourage him. As we know, digging provides hours of entertainment and all dogs need entertainment.





A good border collie is a fantastic dog so I hope you give this a try. It's worked perfectly for me.

Reply:what i did was fence of one part of the garden with grass so i could sit somewhere nice in the summer and put gravel on the other half now if my b.c digs i just shovel the stones back.At the end of the day its not the end of the world if you dont have the perfect garden.you do realise cos u mentioned he was a border collie alot of poeple are going to say u dont walk him enough and that there are hyper.wait for it.
Reply:Okay frist off they is probably a female in heat some were a male dog can small a female in heat up to 7 miles away, So I would get him neutered, regitration papers are just papers, they don't mean anything specail. Neutering him will also reduce him having testicular cancer and prostate cance and plus your dog will live a happier healther life,,,,,,,,
